OMAN ROYAL WING

Completion of Video Smoke Detection (VSD) System at the Royal Hanger Seeb International Airport - Oman

The brand new hanger was built to house 1 x A380 Airbus & 1 x 747 plane.

The Hanger is 210m in length, 110m width & 27m in height. It has no support columns within the hanger (see pic 1)

The system had been designed to have flame detection below the aircraft wings and linear heat detection installed within the roof. This was changed by the consultant and client to VSD after seeing a demonstration of the system by the manufacture D-Tec and Middle East sales & support office BSS-ME

16 low light CCD cameras with 5-50mm lens were installed at a height of 18m from the ground at 30m intervals around the walls of the hanger. Each camera was positioned to monitor/detect an area of approximately 80m in length x 40o Angle

Any smoke appearing above the planes fuselage/wings would be detected by the VSD system. VSD would not wait for the smoke to rise to the roof before going into alarm like all other types of smoke detection, so responding faster to an incident.

All areas below the wings were masked out by the VSD software options.

Detection zones were set up on the VSD software to cover known areas of risk per camera and full screen detection was set up to cover all areas within each camera image.

Of the 20 smoke tests carried out all were successful. In most tests more than 1 camera detected smoke, the best test recorded 5 different cameras in alarm (see pic 2,3 & 4)

Because the VSD picked up alarms from different cameras within the hanger so quickly, the sequence to release the foam was changed to the following:

1. Any two flame detectors in alarm would send a signal to the FAP to raise the alarm (and release the foam after a predetermine time)

2. Any flame detector & any VSD Camera in alarm would raise an alarm (the output of the flame detector to identify which zone of extinguishing foam should be released as any camera could detect the smoke from anywhere within the hanger)

3. Any two VSD cameras in alarm would raise an alarm, but not automatically release the foam (this to be carried out manually)

The VSD successfully detected smoke quicker than any other type of smoke detector previously considered for use in aircraft hangers.
